growing rapidly: and the average number of pigs slaughtered

TO

there has risen from 12.5 per day in 1906 to 19.4 in 1908.

The total numbers are 4,547 for 1906 and 7,094 for 1908.

A further increase may reasonably be expected in 1909 as

the new houses for the Taikoo Docks are being completed

and occupied. This will be a remunerative work as the

probable income for 7,094 pigs at an average cost of 30

cents each would be $2,128 per annum. The Director of

Public Works estimates the cost of building at $8,500.

(c). Prison Extension: $18,000. On the

16th. March last the Assistant Superintendent of Victoria

Gaol reported that the prison was overcrowded, and on the

30th. idem the Principal Civil Medical Officer reported

that there is accommodation in the prison without over-

-crowding for 522 prisoners only. In the following month

Mr. R. H. A. Craig put forward a suggestion to pull down

the offices and some of the stores in the Gaol and erect a

new hall of 78 cells on the ground so made available.

Plenty of space would still remain to re-erect such

offices as are necessary: and prison labour would be avail-

-able to do the work. The scheme was referred to the

Director of Public Works who approved of it and submitted

an estimate of $18,000 based on the assistance to be

afforded
